In the opening scenes of the film, we are introduced to two aspects of Vijay Sethupathi's compassionate and merciless character. One is that he has been keeping the entire village in darkness for months. His best kept secret makes him look like a loser, even thinking of his honor. Anandi-go-lucky fisherman Aasi (Vaishnav Tej), whenever he sees Babamma alias Sangeeta (Kriti Shetty), the daughter of Rena (Sethupathi), is stunned. You know what happens in our films when a poor man falls head over heels in love with a rich girl. The girl would later as soon as possible, but their dreams fall apart in no time. Does this film have a happy ending?
Uppena appears in the first half like a normal formula film. The heroine is shown mooning over the protagonist during a fight scene (but this otherwise regular moment comes with an imaginative spin as the creepy man who is inadvertently beaten then deserves to be thrilled). Asi and Babamma do the deathly things that lovers do in all village-based plays. They share a sweet-tip-thong on the seashores, all managing to keep themselves away from the sight of their elders.
The regular proceedings did not let the audience lose hope due to the first act done smartly. The soulful songs of Devi Sri Prasad ('Nee Kallu Neel Samudram' and 'Ranguladuddunna' in particular) are far better than characterization.
The heroine believes that rage is hasty and the effort to create disgusting humor around it is overwhelming. Aasi's scenes with her father (Sai Chand) are common. Many budding actors come with an aura of innocence (like when he wonders how his father must have felt when his late mother first smiled at him), these scenes don't make viewers feel that That something touching the heart is playing outside.
Sethupathi's character poses a threat of displacement, leaving fishermen stranded in the village in front of their crushing force. These scenes could be milked to give a deco. But the author is content with the stock idea and insipid lines. The scenes included in the antagonist are one-note in the first half. But in the second half there is hope that Sethupathi will help incite violence with Ryanam.
The main driving force of the film is the lead pair, Vaishnav Tej and Kriti Shetty. Both young actors played their roles very closely.
